Peanut butter has been a prevalent fixture in most American’s pantries since its invention in the late 1800s. A brief history of peanuts and peanut butter

Many people mistakenly credit the invention of peanut butter to George Washington Carver. However he is still regarded as one of the greatest American inventors of all time. Throughout the course of his research he found over 300 uses for peanuts. These included using peanut oil for things like shampoo, glue and shaving cream – just to name a few.

While Mr. Carver did create a type of peanut paste, the smooth, spreadable peanut butter we know today didn’t come along until 1895. It was then that Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (also of cereal fame) actually filed the first US Patent for peanut butter.

St. Louis business man George A. Bayle also deserves some of the credit here. His concoction more closely resembles what we have on our grocery store’s shelves today. He invented the peanut spread in conjunction with a local physician who was looking for a high-protein substitute for his patients with bad teeth who could no longer chew meat. This was also great for them because it is a good source of dietary fiber and healthy fats.

At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, peanut butter was introduced to the world and the popularity of the creamy nut butter skyrocketed. But it’s not just because of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
