Doughlicious Delights: Cookie Dough Flavors Steal the Show!
  |   BY NEAL ROTHSTEIN
National Cookie Dough Day is June 21st, so we thought we would celebrate by taking a closer look at the doughy deliciousness that everyone seems to love! While many of us may have fond memories of licking the cake batter, or chocolate chip cookie dough from our grandma’s mixing bowls and spoons, there is a more convenient (and safer) way to enjoy raw cookie dough, no grandma required!
Of course, we’re talking about the advent of edible cookie dough that has delighted our taste buds since the mid-1990’s. For centuries, cookie dough included raw flour and raw eggs, both of which came with a slight risk of E. coli, or salmonella poisoning. Though the chances are relatively small, it’s definitely not worth taking the risk of eating raw eggs and non-heat-treated flour.
Today, an edible cookie dough recipe usually calls for milk instead of eggs, but you can also substitute the eggs with apple sauce, a ripe banana, vinegar and baking soda, or even plain soy yogurt. My grandma used to make chocolate chip cookies with applesauce, and they came out like tiny chocolate chip cakes, they were so light and fluffy and gosh, I sure do miss my grandma’s cookies!
And hey, speaking of cakes, let’s take a quick look at the history of the cookie:
The History of Cookies (and Cookie Dough)
Cookies have been around for many centuries, some dating them as far back as 7th century Persia. Though the region wasn’t the first-known to cultivate and use sugar, they were keen on using sugar they imported from India to make exquisite pastries and cakes.
Here, bakers would begin to take small samples of their dough and bake them to test the oven temperature and the flavor of their creation. Back then they were simply called “test cakes” which would soon evolve to “biscuits,” but the word “cookie” wouldn’t come around for another 900-1,000 years!
Irresistibly Sweet Snacks: Modern Day Cookie Dough Delights!
The first time I enjoyed raw cookie dough in a mass-produced product was probably with Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream in the mid 1990’s. They got the idea for the dessert innovation way back in 1984 from a fan at their very first Scoop Shop in Burlington, Vermont. It was an instant hit and people came from all over the Northeast just to try it.
After spending six arduous years in research and development, they finally perfected their cookie dough recipe and began packing it in pints in 1991. This single flavor really put the brand on the map nationally, and it is still one of their all-time best-selling flavors to this day!
Then, in 1997 at a Blockbuster Video store, I found the holy grail of confectionary delights in Taste of Nature’s Cookie Dough Bites. These chocolate-coated chunks of ready-to-eat cookie dough come in a movie theater box, making them an irresistible impulse-buy just sitting there next to the cash register!
This product perfectly encapsulated the unique flavors you’d find in grandma’s cookie dough – buttery brown sugar, vanilla extract, a hint of sea salt, and mini chocolate chips, but they came in one convenient package that was the perfect way to satisfy my sweet tooth!
Today, this cookie dough candy has become a staple at movie theaters and at-home movie nights for quite some time. Over the years, they have introduced many more flavors to mass appeal, including peanut butter, chocolate fudge brownie, birthday cake, cinnamon bun and red velvet cake. They’ve even ventured into M&M’s, Twix, and Snickers candy bar options. And, trust me, every single one of these flavors is absolutely amazing!
COOKIE DOUGH BITES - CHOCOLATE CHIP THEATER BOX
As with the success of Taste of Nature and Ben & Jerry’s products, many more confectionary companies have come up with their own unique twist on edible cookie dough. The consumption of cookie dough has evolved quite a bit in recent years, from those nostalgic moments in grandma’s kitchen, to a booming industry of ready-to-eat products.
Bespoke cookie dough shops and pre-packaged products have popped up all over the confectionary landscape, offering a safe and convenient way to indulge in this classic treat without any of the risks associated with the traditionally raw ingredients. This trend has only grown as food safety standards and consumer preferences have shifted towards convenience and health consciousness.
